I was driving up a very steep narrow road to a golf course. There were obstacles, some very large rocks, overhanging trees, at one point a tree growing right out of the middle of the heavily rutted road We went very slowly, in four-wheel drive, a necessity considering the cliff dropoff to the left.

We reached the top without incident.

Much later we returned to climb the road again, just before dark. This time snow covered the road and I took it a lot faster. So the road seemed shorter.

I didnt expect to see anyone on the golf course at the top of the road. Naturally it would be closed in winter but more to the point it was closing time so everyone would have gone home.

In the distance, far beyond the rolling hills of the long narrow dirt parking lot, I could just make out a solitary figure walking the course.

I took him for one of the maintenance workers, since he wasnt playing golf.
