Flynn's World . . . . . apr 3 2004 — bookish106.dat

I was never able to finish any of the Fletch series of novels by Gregory McDonald, but I didn't have that problem with the first of the Flynn series that I attempted.

Not the first of the series, Flynn's World, [buy at amazon] by Gregory McDonald, looks into some problems surrounding a Harvard professor's decision to keep on teaching the history ideas. A couple of sub plots, an ancillary mystery, and some family shenanigans of the remarkable and admirable Flynn family liven things up. While it would be incorrect to say that no one suffers any harm (the boyfriend of one of the Flynn daughters has his ear nailed to a tree), at least no fatalities are involved in this non-murder mystery, set adjacent to Boston's finest. Hardcore murder mystery lovers may find this outing too filled with heroes and too facile by half. But in a family that is determined not to watch television, what's not to like? Definitely worth reading for its approach to modern life: a book-length sitcom for non-television watchers?
