Aspects . . . . . aug 19 2003 7:45 — bookish93.dat

About a year ago we had a session in our local java-language study group on aspect-oriented programming in java. Even though everyone got the basic idea, we were all a little fuzzy on the details. Now comes a book.

Although it spends quite a bit of time on the political, or perhaps evangelical aspects of AspectJ initially, AspectJ in Action [buy at amazon] . by Ramnivas Laddad looks like a very clear and complete treatment of aspects. Like the other books in the "In Action" series from Manning, it is filled with very good diagrams.

I'm interested in aspect-oriented programming, which is a way to separate out independent aspects or concerns that cut across all of your code, so chances are good I'll read the whole book. Aspects look very useful; I expect them to become a pretty solid part of the development landscape over the next year or two, as soon as they are well understood. This book will definitely help.
