Library Hike . . . . . jun 9, 2003 — o19.dat

It's a lot of fun walking your dog, especially in Beverly Hills.

Leaving a note that we'd be on channel 1, we pocketed the walkie talkie and headed North, uphill, to the Beverly Hills Library. I had a copy of Enterprise Application Architecture, by Martin Fowler, in my backpack, along with an apple and a baguette, in case I got hungry.

We passed an elementary school, a small park for kids, and there was a country club hidden in the foliage to the left. Narrow concrete channels for runoff gave way to wide green swaths of lawn planted with healthy roses of different colors, including ones with stripes of red and white, that are so incredibly fragrant.

Every so often we tried the walkie talkie, but didn't make contact until we were back within about a mile of the base station. The Motorola device is supposed to have a five-mile range, but that doesn't apply if there's even a slight hill in the way.

My goal was to check out a copy of The Poisonwood Bible [buy at amazon] by Barbara Kingsolver, because this book has been mailed to all incoming students at Mt Holyoke College, where my daughter matriculates this fall. The great benefit of this hike was not to acquire the book, which is a good thing since both copies checked out, but to walk the dog through downtown Beverly Hills.

Halfway home, the dog began looking for places to lie down, and finally I was able to patch through to base camp, which sent out a rescue team, and the dog and I came in from the cold.
