I picked up some coffee and peanut butter cookies at one of the moveon.org bakesales this weekend. Some people I knew went out of their way to find this neighborhood bake sale, in order to make a contribution to defeat Bush on November 2.

After November 2 these people, Mar Vista Neighbors for Peace and Justice, are going to resume playing software in the park (best case scenario), but until then, they're standing on the street corner with signs, as they have every Friday for the past year or so. Their bumper sticker? "Power to the Peaceful."

I paid five dollars for my cup of coffee (nominally one dollar; I had to explain that I was making a donation) and the expression of surprise and gratitude was something I won't soon forget.
