Robert Langdon is back. So, I lined up at the bookstore thinking it’s the same page-turning experience I had with The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons. After 30 or so pages, I can’t seem to turn the page anymore. I was wrong. Yeah, Robert Langdon is back… but he’s not back with a vengeance.

First, the plot starts with an invitation to Robert by one of his good friends and mentor, Peter Solomon, to be the main speaker of a huge engagement. The invitation was not done by Peter Solomon himself, just by an assistant, and “knowing” Robert’s history of demise, it would not be very typical of him to accept such an invitation if he wasn’t sure of what he’s getting into. But still, he accepted, went out of his way to just do this “speech” only to find out that Peter has been kidnapped and the person who’s keeping Peter is planning to do the same thing to him, unless he helps him unlock, of course, a code.

This is not your typical cat and mouse chase that we are used to with the first two Dan Brown novels. This book is more of a suspense-thriller-serial killer type of chase because the villian is gorier than the other villians in the two previous books, more so like the villian in Red Dragon. Mal’akh, the villian, is a tattooed, scary guy who is after an item that will bring him great power.

My addiction to Dan Brown novels started with the Da Vinci Code. I loved every page of it. I was too engrossed; I didn’t dare put it down. It’s the same thing with Angels and Demons. Needless to say, I grabbed The Lost Symbol as soon as it was released. I must say that The Lost Symbol delivered. It met my expectations. I guess it is also safe to say that it’s actually my favorite among the adventures of Robert Langdon.

Like its predecessors, The Lost Symbol is definitely a page-turner.

The story begins with a scene so mysterious, dark, and dramatic that readers know they’re in for a great treat. By the end of the first chapter, the audience will be full of questions. They might even be tempted to do a little research about the validity of the ritual described in said chapter. Later on, readers will be introduced to the world of Noetic Sciences-another set of questions will fill the curious minds of readers.

The Lost Symbol portrays the world as governed by high ranking officials, who turn out to be members of a very secretive and guarded institution—the Masons. Some might even think that they are members of a cult. Other readers might also question the credibility of the government officials, especially after knowing about the rituals that seem too morbid for the faint of heart. However, the story shows that looks can truly be deceiving. For in the end, these officials were able to adhere to their principles and even managed to save the world from falling into the hands of a malicious and power-hungry character.

Of course, the accomplishments of these officials are nothing without the help of Robert Langdon. With his expertise, this professor was able to crack the codes needed to save the world.

What I love most about this story is that it revolves around the significance of faith, trust, and sticking to your principles no matter the cost.
